Case CATalyst's extensive use of Windows conventions and standards helps streamline your learning. Build on what you already know and apply what you learn to all your computing. For example, Windows' support of long file names makes it easier for you to file your jobs with meaningful names for quick retrieval. Using the customary File New, File Open, Recently Used, Save, Save As, Cut, Copy and Paste is easy since the commands work the same way in all your programs. Moving, docking, floating or hiding toolbars are further examples of standard Windows features that are at your fingertips in Case CATalyst, and all genuine Windows programs, to help keep your computing simple!
Get up and going easily
Move right into CATalyst without worrying about lost time. Easily convert your own dictionary or start with one of our standard theory dictionaries. Select which of the included Start Up Files are used in your particular venue and only modify them if you wish. A simple intuitive human interface leads you where you want to go. The integrated Computer Based Training module teaches you the basic steps you'll need to know. Then you are on your way to getting more done in less time than ever before.
Get information when and where you need it
Case Management keeps all your related jobs, dictionaries and word lists in one virtual briefcase and automatically uses them on future jobs so that you don't have to remember to do so. You'll never waste time re-entering globals/defines or looking up words that you've already checked. Wondering why something translated the way it did? Simply click to go directly to the dictionary entry for the behind-the-scenes answer to your question right when you need it.
You'll also find an easy-to-use Backup and Restore feature to move your files off your computer to save disk space, reduce clutter and retrieve them when you need to with the click of a button. You don't have to leave your software and grapple with other Windows programs for this central housekeeping chore. When you are ready to retrieve a job, you can sort your jobs by date last edited, size, type, date backed up and more. You won't waste your valuable time because information is where you need it when you need it.
See things the way you want to see them
View and edit your transcript in a "print preview" display to see headers, footers, line numbers, page numbers, etc. exactly as they will appear on the paper. There will be no surprises or wasted paper at print time. You can Zoom in or out to suit your visual preferences and change it at your whim for personal comfort.
Do you want to know more about why something looks the way it does? Reveal Codes shows format symbols in a manner similar to popular word processing programs. In this mode you can make changes and see the results immediately.
Steno notes will track with you as you edit through the job to keep you right on target when you want to refer to them. If seeing is believing, just open a dictionary or global table to get the facts and amend entries as needed. Sort, search or print by steno, text or type of entry to get what you are looking for. Then, delete or modify them as you see fit for a more efficient dictionary.
Do things your way
Choose a keyboard mode to mimic your old software and reduce your learning curve. Alternatively, create your own keyboard to optimize the way you uniquely like to work. You'll get your work done faster doing it your way.
Use EZKeys (macros) to combine several of your common actions on one key. EZKeys are simple to set up and they will mean less effort on your part for the things you do day after day.
On the topic of doing things your way, you decide whether your globals/defines go directly into your dictionary or into a holding area where you'll review them later. Set it up the way you want it and change your mind at any time. Do it your way and get it done!

Automatic number converts and triggers correct common formats based on context, such as social security numbers, telephone numbers, identification numbers, currencies or any format you wish. You don't have to write any extra strokes unless you want to! You are relieved of the work of coping with number formats and enjoy the improved appearance of your realtime display for your clients to view.
Multi-syllabic words are constructed by attaching word endings to root words while correcting spellings, just as you would yourself, but now you don't have to take the time to do it!
Writing your occasional shadowed letters is not a problem because shadowed letters are recognized and translation has been improved. You don't have to spend time correcting it manually. Likewise, if you like to drag your suffix into the word in front of it, it's no problem. The logic is there to see what you've done and still make you look good.
Defining multiple speaker symbols or tokens can be a time-consuming chore. With CATalyst, you have EZ Speakers, which takes your standard tokens such as STPHAO and SKWRAO and special tokens such as R-ED/R-ED for Redman and automatically creates all speaker defines/globals directly in Translate. No matter how you stroke or misstroke your tokens , the speaker's name will appear in By Lines and Colloquy perfectly without any extra effort by you.
Oops, did you miss a By Line ? No problem. CATalyst saw you write the Q after Colloquy and put in the By Line for you. Accidentally hit that Q or A bank twice? We'll take care of that for you too so you don't have to.
Accomplish more in less time
Waiting while the witness is looking over documents or conferring with counsel can be a waste of time. Get some work done and improve the quality of your first-pass transcript by defining right from your steno keyboard to improve translation and reduce edit time. You can use the in-line translator to write out already defined versions of the word and build new words from elements in your dictionary, or you can finger spell unusual words. Posed at the ready with your hands on your machine, you are always prepared to get back on the record!
Speed up your productivity by splitting your screen to see older testimony and newer testimony at the same time. Toggle to the older testimony during pauses and return to current text as soon as testimony resumes. This is one great way to accomplish more in less time!
Spell checking is that essential last step before printing. With a definition base of 215,000 words, it is a valuable resource to get through the job quickly. Pause the spell check at any time to fix any other errors you see and resume where you left off so you don't waste time checking
portions of the document twice.
Spend time doing instead of redoing
Edit at your top speed knowing that you can instantly correct your own blunders! Reverse one or any number of steps and keep going unfettered. You can undo globals and dictionary entries to recover from those errors we all make while learning something new or working late into the night.
Feel free to change your mind without losing time when selecting/marking because you can readily expand or collapse the marked steno or text without starting over. Don't retype a word or phrase because it isn't capitalized properly, just toggle the capitalization for initial caps, all or none.
If you are like many editors and scopists, you spend much of your time replacing words or phrases . Typing to global/replace something you previously typed is obsolete with CATalyst4. Using its intuition , CATalyst suggests a replacement for the context you've indicated. If the suggestion doesn't match this time, you can instantly toggle through a list of replacements that is automatically generated. Never spend your time needlessly retyping a replacement again!
Create professional looking transcripts
With CATalyst's Table feature, replace your Plaintiff, Defendant, or Index item descriptions into your case caption "bird cage" or your Index page without worrying about text shifting or changing your format. The text wraps within the proper area so you don't have to worry about it.
Choose any font, both fixed and proportional, for individual words, headers and footers, phrases, blocks of text and paragraphs to get a great look. Add some color to your personal image and your transcripts for a unique presentation. Blue Q's and red A's, anyone? How about using color-coded Speaker IDs or By Lines to appeal to your clients?
